Other Things Going On

Looking Back

The Young Ladies Reading and Charitable Society was founded in Seekonk, Massachusetts around 1819. Members would read aloud from a collection of books stored in a trunk, while others knitted, crocheted, sewed, or braided

straw. The Society became The Female Library Society, open to women only until 1883 when men were allowed to join. The Library was divided between Seekonk and East Providence in 1886 and was renamed the East Providence Free Library Association. Books belonging to East Providence were moved to a new building which eventually became the Rumford Branch of the East Providence Public Library system, before closing in 2012.
